To prepare the world press for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Bo Andersson, co-founder and CEO of GRIN, the development studio of this game, made a producer tour to all corners of the world to show a beta version of the game. was there when Bo was in The Game Syndicate in Rotterdam and asked him questions about specific features which will appear in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the PC. No well-known facts or questions about the number of levels or polygons, but detailed information about the game, and specifically the multiplayer part.
While playing the game it would crash every now and then. Bo wasn’t surprised and told us that it should crash, otherwise it would have been the final version.
Bo used to be in the military, and his contribution to the game is found in the military aspects and the artificial intelligence for team-mates and enemies.

Differences and similarities
If you’ve played one of the console versions of Ghost Recon, you’ll on the one hand recognize locations and material, but on the other hand you’ll see differences.
The PC version was developed separately from the console versions, but is based on the same image and video material from Mexico City and of course on the same city map. The resulting game is much larger than the console version, resulting in longer missions.
We’ve received emails from worried people with questions regarding the stability of the game. Stability has a high priority at GRIN, because missions can last for several hours and you don’t want to crash just before a checkpoint. Using the official internet forums GRIN will try to stay in contact with the community, especially regarding problems with the game.

This brings us to the patches. Every program contains bugs, even GRAW, something which Bo doesn’t deny. Patches will be released which will contain bugfixes as well as additional content.
Another point of frustration with the community is cheating. GRIN chose to develop their own anti-cheat solution, instead of using third-party tools like Punkbuster. The anti-cheat functionality will be updated with patches as well.

Now the most important aspect of the game for hard-core gamers: multiplayer. You can play with and against each other over local area network and internet, because cooperative play is also included. Together with your friends and optional AI players you can take on the singleplayer missions, with the difference that the enemies are much more difficult and there is no save option during missions. When a human player dies, he cannot respawn, but it is possible to take over an artificial teammate, when there are any alive. When the last human player dies and there are no more artificial teammates left, the mission is failed.
You can start a server from within the game, where you’ll find the option to host a dedicated or listen server. If a separate dedicated server will be available during launch is unsure, it might be developed and released later. GRAW will be using Gamespy for its internal server browser, and you don’t have to memorize IP addresses, because a favourite server save option is provided.
The server will be managed using the internal game menu, and there is at this moment no intention to create a remote console option. When you run a dedicated server you’ll need a computer comparable with a computer you need to run the game, with the exception that a server doesn’t need a high end videocard, and needs more memory and bandwidth, depending on the number of players.
Something which was previously not possible is possible now: joining a running game. No more waiting until the game is finished, you can join whenever you want, something which is quite normal for less tactical FPS games. For people who want to stick with the old behaviour there will be an option to switch this.
Features which might get added in a patch, but which are not included in 1.0 are demo recording and ingame content download, so you’ll be able to join any server, even if you don’t have that map. There will be no ingame voice communication, a decision which I support. There are enough good external tools available, something which GRIN has correctly taken into consideration.

The last item we discussed was the availability of modding tools. There will be a mapeditor available, and other aspects of the game will be changeable using the XML based configuration files.
Bo wanted to stress that GRIN will keep listening to the community after the release and that features might get added or changed based on the response.

GRIN GRAW Video - by: FcUK_A GRIN Video 22mb

A word-for-word translation and a sentence-for-sentence comparison for all you language-interested people.

It has been us, Redstorm and Ubisoft's internal studio in Paris.

What we've done really is we've shared a common story line and the "narration" - that which the CNN reporter reads, or your general who gives you missions etc.

What we've been allowed to create freely is the way each "mission" works, and how the "gameplay" really works - for the PC version.

The difference from the 360 is that the PC version is much larger - it's three times as big. So you have a lot of terrain to move through.

We use an entirely different engine, for example. It's GRIN's own engine since seven years, that we use.

The animations are different too, and, well the entire graphic "look" we've redone from the ground up - so all architecture and all "props" and all that stuff are unique for the PC version.

Those who have an AGEIA card only get more visual, or physical effects - and those who don't have one will have less physical and less visual effect, but it won't affect how they play against each other.

What we've had to do is write a general AI, that can handle situations regardless of where you put it - so there is almost no "pre-scripted" stuff in Ghost Recon, but the AI is very adaptive and... reactive to what you do, which caters for a lot of interesting situations every time you play the game over again. It is different every time.

And also, on the AI side you have this thing with the team - you don't have to "babysit" them, but you really utilize them as a tool.

There is a certain demand for realism in Ghost Recon, that you have to take into consideration.

That which has been the greatest challange, has been to realize Mexico in detail - on such large areas - and there we have worked together with UBIsoft to produce photos over Mexico City... make sure the details are right.

Now the game takes place in 2013 so we are allowed to take certain liberties, how certain streets run - if something has happened to a certain building etc. Everything for the gameplay.

The co-op side works right now so that you can play four guys through the entire campaign.

So you have, so you can create a special forces group - so that you can sit at home with your buddies and play through, well, the entire adventure.

In that group you have a "team leader" who can issue orders, so that you can tell the others "yeah, I want you on that position, and you should lay over fire over there..." So you have one who controls the entire thing, and the others who act around that.

Now we're mostly sitting around, polishing, so to say - so now we have had the time to play.

When you are in the developing phase, you really just sit and test the small, different emelents - but the last two, three months there's a lot more "multi player", very much sit down and test the gameplay and each mission, so... that has been quite fun.

Above all it's been a blast to play multi player against UBIsoft's testing department... that by the way never wins against us... haha...

More Ghost Recon Advnaced Warfighter PC Q&A - by: FcUK_P

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter PC only live chat
Date: Dec. 1st, 2005

[Ryosan] Bruno Guerin - EMEA Community Manager
[Ulf] Mathieu Girard – Producer, Bo Andersson - Executive Producer and military expert, Ulf Andersson - Lead Game Designer, Simon Viklund - Sound Designer

[Ryosan] Our guests this evening are Mathieu Girard (Producer), Bo Andersson (Executive Producer and military expert), Ulf Andersson (Lead Game Designer) and Simon Viklund (Sound Designer).
[Ulf] Hello everybody!
[Ryosan] Thanks for taking the time to be with us guys. We have a small issue so the guests will answer through one PC only, but they're all here ;) Let’s begin, then!

[RatoN] How many enemy AIs will we be fighting in GRAW SP and COOP?
[Ulf] Up to 20 against you and your ghosts. Plus there are vehicles, both in the air and on ground.

[[MAD]Inferno] Is there a scheduled demo before the official release of GRAW?
[Ulf] Yes, the demo is scheduled for release in the beginning of 2006, before the release of the full game.

[Joseph_Q] Can you tell us about recommended and min specs?
[Ulf] We haven't determined the minimum specs accurately yet, but we are of course concerned that everybody should be able to play the game. The engine allows scaling of features and detail levels.

[DS] How large will the maps be, SP and MP?
[Ulf] Wait, we'll try to find a ruler... The maps have an average size of 600x600 meters, in SP.

[stevenmu] Will there be 'soul-switching' in the single player mode or will Cpt. Mitchell dying mean 'Game Over'?
[Ulf] Yes, in this game, you take on the role of one single soldier - just as you would if entering a real battle. If you die, you're dead. You can see through your team mates' head-mounted cameras, to see where they're at, this replicates a bit of the GR1 tactical feeling.

[XtraT] So, how realistic will the game be? Are there any real army people helping with making the game as realistic as possible?
[Ulf] Bo: yes we have a lot of guidance from former army specialists from outside the company and from the inside as well. I myself was signed to a special forces unit here in Sweden for two years before starting GRIN. That of course gives me a great benefit and pleasure to be hands on in the project. Also the connection with RSE and their army contacts is a great inspiration.

[Peter] Everyone knows that PC-gamers love cooperative game style - still, almost no game developers seem to understand it. Will Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for PC support cooperative game style?
[Ulf] Of course - this is one of our main focuses for the entire gameplay. The tactical approach is balanced with the co-op in mind.

[Prozac] Will the HUD be customisable and to what degree? Colours, position, size, on/off...
[Ulf] Depending on what happens in-game, the HUD adapts and changes, to give you more intel if that's what you need, and more view, if that's what you need.

[Vth_F_Smith] How many people were involved in the Production of GR:AW?
[Ulf] About 40 people for the core team on the PC version, plus a lot more people from UBI.

[Tricksta] What game engine will you be using ? Is it old or a new engine?
[Ulf] It's our own Diesel Engine, version 6.0. It's a next-gen engine that we've developed over time in collaboration with nVidia, ATI and also of late Ageia to support the latest and greatest PC hardware features.

[Kirq] how many bullets is needed to eliminate enemy in GRAW ?
[Ulf] That depends entirely on his protection - as in real life, you can hardly survive a bullet to the head, although you can take two, maybe three in your vest. Oh, and it depends on the weapon you're using, too.

[SleChY|GP] there will be prototype weapons in the game? what can we expect of this?
[Ulf] Yes, the CRYE and the XM8. All the rest are existing weapons that are in use today.

[WhiteKnight77] Why the arrows pointing out team mate positions?
[Ulf] Yo Whitey. So that you'll know where they're at. In GRAW, it is very important to cover you angles, and position you team correctly at all time. Moving down the streets, you cannot run'n'gun. You have to make tactical choices all the time, and your team mates is your tool to get the upper hand in combat.

[KS-Grizzli[ModoFR]] Will you provide a SDK?
[Ulf] We cannot reveal that information as of now, but it's in the works. =)

[Kirq] Please tell us something about replayability aspect of GRAW ?
[Ulf] Replaying the game, you can of course choose to take alternative routes through the maps, as well as different tactical approaches. The AI will of course adapt to your tactical approach, and team setup - varying your experience greatly. The non-linear maps open up huge possibilities different strategies.

[Kirq] Is gore level in GRAW going to be similar to GR1 ?
[Ulf] Yes, the gore level of GR1 and GRAW are about the same level.

[[MAD]Inferno] What measures are being taken for an anti-cheat?
[Ulf] We want to implement anti-cheat measures as late as possible, to assure that we get the latest and best to address this important issue. We cannot reveal more than that at the moment.
[Peter] Apart from the most obvious - reconfigurable controls and higher resolutions - how will Grin make sure that Ghost Recon 3 won't be another Playstation 2-conversion running on modern PC hardware?
[Ulf] First off, content art, sound, technology and gameplay is entirely unique for the PC version. The entire PC version is made exclusively for the PC, and stand alone from the console versions in terms of gameplay. I'll go a bit further on this: First off: The tactical layer of the PC game is much more advanced than the console approach. We have a real time 3d view of the battle field where you as a squad leader can see the action and plan it real time. This to be able to set up the best tactical approach as the combat and pre-combat changes. Adding to this we have individual control of 3 team mates and other support troops. This to design complex flanking and attacking patterns both on the fly and through your tactical interface. It is really a tactical sim as you never have seen before on any format. Next we have a exclusively designed control on the PC that makes the player immersed in the body of Captain M. We are able to control him with great accuracy for both stealth, position in covers and shooting positions. This is what we call the advanced leaning system which allows 8 way leaning, sliding and even diving into cover.

[ShytKicker] Another question, what will the final game use? Third-person view, first-person, or over-the-shoulder? Seems like I seen trailers with all 3 used. And my fav was over-the-shoulder.
[Ulf] The PC version is 1st person only.

[RatoN] Did you find a solution for Replays? If so, are we gonna have Replays in GRAW?
[Ulf] We know how important the issue is for the online gaming community. We're looking into it, though. I'd love to have the feature in myself. We hope to get it in, but we cannot guarantee that we'll succeed, at this point.

[Paul] Tell us something more about your Graphic Engine, will it fully support Pixel Shader 3.0, and effects like HDR (High Dynamic Range) ?
[Ulf] Yes, and for the record: We were the first company to release a game with pixel shaders in. we know these kinds of features like the back of our hands. =D GRAW PC features HDR lighting, soft shadows, deferred lighting, normal mapping on everything, and an incredibly dynamic and destructible environment.

[Mumbles] Will the dead bodies remain on screen?
[Ulf] Yes.

[smoker`SleG0ne] did the team go to Mexico city?
[Ulf] Yes, we did, and we brought back plenty of photos and videos for reference to our artists. Hopefully, we're going back there after the project. =D

[stevenmu] What can you tell us about the atmosphere of the game, will there be other events happening separate to us around the city as in a real conflict ?
[Ulf] Yes, you're involved in a big and pretty intense operation, where you work alongside other units to get the job done. Through your interface you will also receive updates and intel as to what is going on at other fronts within the city.

[pagey] AT what time of day the maps are playable… do we got night, day, dawn, etc. options?..(and rain)
[Ulf] Yes, there will be missions at dusk, dawn, night and day. Everything looks beautiful.

[[MAD]Inferno] Will there be more of a push towards GRAW for PC suggesting that most first person shooters are preferred on the PC; such as more media and better means of getting news and information to the consumers?
[Ulf] Yes, you will soon see GRAW PC specific coverage, including more screenshots, audio teasers, live in-game footage, and more.

[rovholet] The colours and graphics reminds me a lot of black hawk down, Were you heavily influenced by that movie when you designed the game?
[Ulf] Black Hawk down is a movie that we studied in detail because it uses light and colour changes to clearly indicate the mood of a scene. Before a fight, things look smooth, but as the bullets start flying and things get dangerous, the light changes to a more cold and "hard" hue. We use that in game as well, to emphasize the situation.

[Ryosan] To finish this live chat, it's now the dev turn to ask you one question :)
[Ulf] Ok, we at GRIN want to know...
[Ryosan] and at Ubisoft ;)
[Ulf] If we were to develop an expansion pack - what would you like to see in it?

[Ryosan] and I open the chat...
[XtraT] Women
[Gadzooks] Snipers :-)
[Kirq] Jungle campaign !!!
[RatoN] FOREST!!!
[Jaykob] cows
[Bad_Boy561] lol
[Squall_Rifleman] Rural maps!!!
[stevenmu] Different terrain desert, jungle etc
[MadMac] Winter
[ddd] indian village
[Kimi|1UP] Snow
[Oye] More urban fighting
[Gadzooks] Vehicles !!!!!!!!
[Jaykob] lakes
[aar88] MORE GUNS
[MadMac] and a Port to Mac OS X
[Squall_Rifleman] Oh, and larger squad size.
[Peter] Ulf: Advanced physics, extended cooperative support, dynamic weather changes, day/night cycle, highly interactive environments in multiplayer.
[RatoN] raccoons
[mbrainiac] A Spec Ops opponent
[DS] Desert
[UK_Joker] no cheats
[DS] To be able to use the old maps...but enhanced
[RatoN] Aliens type
[Vth_F_Smith] Clan Support! ;)

[Ryosan] A lot of questions remain unanswered but we'll surely have other opportunities to run this kind of live chat :) Stay tuned on and the forums for more good news :)

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter PC Multiplayer Q&A - by: FcUK_P Up to 32 players will be able to join the multiplayer mode.

Will GRAW support Linux and/or All Seeing Eye?
We will not support Linux servers when the game comes out, but this may be implemented afterwards. Time permitting we will include the All Seeing Eye feature.

Will there be dedicated servers?
Yes, we plan to run dedicated servers.

Will we be able to activate/deactivate Punkbuster in LAN without being connected to the internet?
Not everything has been decided yet regarding anti-cheat solutions, but your question is relevant and we’ll take it into account when we will start working on the subject. ?

What multiplayer modes will there be?
It is a bit too early to detail all the multiplayer modes that will be available in the final version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter PC.

Will GR maintain it's 1 shot-1 kill standard?
This option will still be available at higher difficulty levels, and it will be scalable in multiplayer games.

Will the Cross-Com be used in MP?
Yes of course the CrossCom will be used in multiplayer games. Keeping this feature is essential and will allow us to maintain the tactical depth of the game while playing online.

Is it going to require a T1 with a gigabit gaming router and ping times under 20 ms to get half decent performance?
No, a cable or ADSL connection will really be enough to play the game online.

i which that UBI would get that game sorted allready...

Heather Chandler - I am really focused on the Xbox version of the game – as I mentioned, there is a separate development team working on the PC version of Ghost Recon 2, and while I don’t have that information right now, keep an eye out for more details about the differences between the two.
