I got a gigabyte mobo.... it can run raid 0 or 1 but also if u dont want to run raid, which i think you dont,,, then you can use the raid slots as ide slots and have upto 8 drives attached...


dont load any Raid drivers from motherboard, u need to load the ultra ide PROMISE drivers for the raid chip. Well the chipset is called promise on mine.

If u use 2 drives for raid then u need 2 the same or the large 1 would be wasted as it mimics the smaller 1.

looking at the website, the sata raid driver looks like its for setting up 2 sata drives in a 1 or 0 raid config, u havent got 2 drives.


personally i would leave the drive out for d/l's and apps and get the OS installed on yer number 1 drive with all yer mobo drivers loaded etc thus ensuring all mobo and OS is working fine, the connect yer next biggest drive and format and partion using disk manager, then load yer SATA up installing drivers for yer RAID chips so as not to use as raid, if you know what i mean.....

good answer _H. I have two SATA HDD's in mine, getting them recongized in DOS was ez. but installing XP caused me no end of trouble. Can't remember how i sorted it tho but it wasn't by following the instructions or any shit like that i used a third party SATA boot disk. I'll have a think.

But the second drive doesn't have to mimic the first one, i got an 80gig and a 120gig.

mine's an MSI board.

_W, if your mirroring then your largest drive will only be used up to the amount of your smallest, so 40gb of yer 120gb will not be used, i believe its the same for striping. So the drives dont have to be the same size, but some space wont be used on the biggest.
