This game is free and runs on dialup modems. It is primarily space combat, but there are mods for it. I think I could call is massively multiplayer because the big servers (TW, EG, DSB) have at least 30 people in each 'arena' and up to 300 in special events.

After looking at those links id just like to say games have moved far beyond Asteroids!
Long gone are the days of atari2600.
And do ya think people would pay to play that?

People did pay for it 7 years ago, but the company (VIE UK) went bust, cheaters moved in and Priit 'Kazaa' Kasesalu made a new client from scratch to stop the hacks (while at the same time adding a load of new features).
The game can run on standard hardware, 2mb gfx, 233mhz stuff (directx 2). A couple of pay 2 play rip offs you may have heard about are 'Infantry' and 'Cosmic Rift' both by Sony.
Unlike the 'new' games these days this game has a decent chat system on par with IRC and ban system far better than raven shield. If you look at UT and UT2k3 all the gametypes look suspiciously similar to subspace.
If you do give it a try be sure to refresh the server list because all the noobs go to TW (that's why it has 400-700 playing at all times). Oh, and it doesn't require you to reset your machine every 30min to keep playing, include spyware or have insane download time for maps.
